Chapter 10
The Moods of Spring
The first weeks that followed the spring gathering were as tempestuous as the teenage-like goddess herself; for the first two weeks of her stay, there were four seasons every day. Showers of rain came pouring out of the sky like great waterfalls, and the winds that moved the rain on were so strong they made the water look as though it was bending sideways as they escorted it away in a south-easterly direction. Sometimes the sky would be bright and clear with sunshine, yet at other times snow would fall, only to disappear before reaching the now beautifully coloured floor of the Dip-n-Dells. Flowers of all description had burst open, and every new day of Brigishaâs reign brought more buds popping out of the ground and blossom decorating the trees.
âBrigisha brings everything above the surface in her season; she is unashamedly honest and wants nothing to be hidden. She reveals all that is beautiful and new, but she also teaches us about the challenges that lie ahead. Even the most perfect flower will have to withstand the harsh winds and changeable conditions that come in the first part of her season. Every creature knows that this is one of the most important times for survival. But those who endure the hardships of early spring will be stronger for it, and for them there is always the promise of a long fruitful summer.â
Grandma was telling Dill, Jack and his two sisters all about the goddess of spring under a piece of flat board held up by two posts with a big green tarpaulin slung over it: Dillâs den. Sheâd had the great idea of building a little lean-to that would cover the tunnel that led to the Brabbitsâ place, and it had been made from materials that had come from the shed when Dillâs parents had cleared it out. Now Dill could spend time with his friends in a place that was safe for the little rabbits. It had become a daily meeting-place.
âYou have to wonder if the goddesses are in fact different women or just different stages of womanhood that display every side of feminine wisdom and the compassion of Mother Nature herself,â Grandma went on. âBrigisha seems to show us all the transformation and yet turbulent energy that youth brings. She has an abundance of life-changing power and aspirations for new things. She is youthful, she can afford to give, and there is no greater gift a young female can give to this world than her true self and her willingness to bring new life.â
âGrandma Vi,â Flopsy Brabbit asked, lifting her ears up, âdoes the goddess Brigisha never grow old?â
âWell, sweetheart, none of us really grow old inside, we just change like the seasons.â
Grandma would have loved to have answered more questions for the youngsters, but she knew it was time to move on, because Bramble, who was keeping watch in the garden, was making noises and sensing that Dillâs parents were around.
âCome now, children.â Mrs Brabbit, that vehicle of sense, had poked her head through the hole in the wall.
